Sharpen an image

Crisper edges in one step; change the amount or undo it.

How to use it

Yes, free and with nothing uploaded: open the photo and Unsharp Mask runs once at 100%, radius 1 pixel, threshold 3, and the file keeps its size and format. Edges gain contrast, so a slightly soft photo reads crisper; the threshold leaves faint grain alone. Change Amount on the card, or open Unsharp Mask to set radius and threshold too. Sharpening raises the edges that are there; it cannot bring back focus that was missed.

  1. Click Choose a photo, or drop an image on the page. History shows Unsharp Mask.
  2. Zoom to 100% and compare. For more or less, type an Amount on the card (20 to 500%) and press Enter; the previous sharpening is undone first, so History keeps one step.
  3. To set radius and threshold as well, click More options…: the automatic step is undone and Unsharp Mask opens. Keep Radius at 1 to 2 px for photos, raise Threshold to 3 to 5 on a grainy or heavily compressed picture. Cancel puts the automatic step back.
  4. Click Download JPG. A PNG is saved as PNG. For a picture with color fringes, choose Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen... instead; it sharpens brightness only.

OpensJPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, AVIF, PSD and other images
SavesSame size and format; JPG at quality 92, PNG lossless
Limit & where16384 px a side, 100 million pixels; in your browser, nothing uploaded
Tested (29 Oct 2026)Sample 1600 × 1066 photo, defaults: average edge contrast (mean difference between neighboring pixels) rose 28%, from 1.78 to 2.28 levels; the JPG went from 180 KB to 200 KB

Sharpening raises the contrast on edges that are already there. A photo that was out of focus or moved during the exposure has no edge to raise, so it will look the same, only harsher; this page cannot bring that detail back. Unsharp Mask works on all three color channels, so a strong amount can add color fringes. One image at a time, only the active layer; JPG is re-encoded once at quality 92 and the download carries no EXIF.

Can I unblur a picture online for free?
Only a slightly soft one. Sharpening makes existing edges stand out; a photo that was out of focus or shaken has lost that detail. Filter > Sharpen > Shake Reduction... can help a little with camera shake; try it and undo if it does not.
What sharpening settings should I use?
Start at 100% and 1 px for a full-size photo. Around 150% at 1 to 1.5 px is a common starting point for print, 60 to 80% for a small web image. Keep Threshold at 3 to 5 so grain is not sharpened, and judge each at 100%.
Why do I see colored edges after sharpening?
Unsharp Mask works on red, green and blue separately, so a high amount can fringe high-contrast edges. Lower Amount, or use Smart Sharpen, which sharpens brightness only.
Can I sharpen only part of a photo?
Yes, in the editor. Undo the full sharpening, select the area, then choose Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask...; only the selection changes.
