Pick a color from an image

Click a spot on your picture and copy its HEX code.

How to use it

Choose a picture and the Eyedropper Tool is already selected. Click a spot: the card shows the HEX code, RGB and a CMYK estimate, and Copy HEX puts the code on your clipboard. For a photo with grain, set Sample Size to 3 by 3 Average or larger so one noisy pixel doesn't decide the color. The value is sRGB, the space web pages and screens use.

  1. Click Choose a picture, or drop a screenshot on the page. The Eyedropper Tool is selected and the Info panel opens.
  2. Click the color you want, or drag to watch the value change as you move. For photos, set Sample Size in the options bar to 3 by 3 Average or larger.
  3. Click Copy HEX on the card. To keep several colors, click Add to Swatches after each one, or use the Color Sampler Tool to pin up to 10 numbered points that the Info panel lists together.
ItemDetails
OpensJPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PSD, SVG and PDF pages
ShowsHEX, RGB and a CMYK press estimate; one pixel, or a 3 × 3 to 101 × 101 average
Limit & whereUp to 100 million pixels a file; in your browser, nothing uploaded

Values are 8-bit sRGB: a photo saved in Display P3 or ProPhoto is converted when it opens, and colors outside sRGB are clipped, so a very saturated red reads a little duller than on an iPhone screen. There is no HSB or HSL readout and no automatic palette from the whole picture. CMYK is an estimate for a generic press, not your printer's profile.

Why does the HEX differ from another tool by one or two?
The other tool may read the picture in its own color space or average a different area. Set Sample Size to Point Sample to read exactly one pixel.
Can I get a palette of the whole image?
Not here: this page reads the exact color you click. Click Add to Swatches after each pick to build a set by hand.
What is the HEX code of a white or transparent background?
White is #FFFFFF. Clicking a fully transparent spot (the checkerboard) picks nothing, and the card keeps the last color.
