Add text to a GIF

Put a caption on an animated GIF in seconds, still animated.

How to use it

Choose a GIF and Photopip opens every frame as a layer, then adds a text layer at the bottom: white letters with a black outline, the usual meme caption. The text layer sits above all the frames, so it shows on every one. Double-click it to type your own words; the result card writes the GIF again as you go.

  1. Click Choose a GIF, or drop it on the page. The frames open as layers, a caption reading Your text here appears at the bottom, and the type tool is selected.
  2. Double-click the caption and type your words. Drag it with the Move Tool, and change the font, size or color in the Character panel. On desktop Chrome or Edge, Load Local Fonts... in the font list adds the fonts installed on your computer.
  3. Read the card and click Download GIF. For the 480 × 270 sample it reads 81 KB → 88 KB · GIF · 480 × 270; type 240 in Width for a 51 KB file.
Why is the GIF bigger after adding text?
The caption adds new pixels to every frame, and the whole animation is written again: the sample grew by 9%, and the card says so under the title. A smaller Width or fewer colors brings it back down.
Can I use the Impact meme font?
The caption starts in Impact when your computer has it, otherwise in Arial Black or a bold system font; on a phone it is usually the system font. On desktop Chrome or Edge you can also open Load Local Fonts..., allow access and pick any installed font.
Can I add a second line at the top?
Yes. Click Add Text under Next in the card: another caption appears at the bottom. Drag it to the top with the Move Tool.
Will the caption look sharp?
White with a black outline stays clean. Thin or colored letters can look jagged at the edges, because every frame is limited to 256 colors.
What are the limits?
One GIF at a time. The caption stays still over the whole animation; it doesn't fade or move. Up to 256 colors a frame, dithered, with the original frame timing and loop. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
