Choose a GIF and Photopip opens every frame as a layer. Type the width you need in the result card: the height follows, all frames are scaled together, and the size line shows the original and the new file size before you download. The picture on the canvas keeps its size; only the GIF you download changes.
- Click Choose a GIF, or drop it on the page. The frames open as layers, and for the sample the card reads Animated GIF, 24 frames. Until you change something, it adds Unchanged, so you download the original file.
- Type a new Width in the card and press Enter (on a phone, tap outside the box). For the 480 × 270 sample, 240 gives 81 KB → 54 KB · GIF · 240 × 135. To go smaller still, click 128 next to Color: the same GIF comes to 42 KB.
- Click Download GIF. To play it only once or to turn dithering off, click More options... to open Save for Web (Legacy). It opens at the original size with its own color setting, so set the width and colors there again.
- Will the resized GIF flicker?
- Not from leftover patches. Each frame is opened as a complete picture and all frames are scaled together, so nothing of the old size stays behind. Flat colors can shimmer a little because every frame is dithered; turn dithering off in More options... if you see it, and set the width there again.
- Does a smaller width always mean a smaller file?
- Usually, not always. In our tests, half the width took a 1.9 MB GIF made from video to 1.1 MB and a 4.8 MB screen recording to 1.1 MB, but an 80 KB sticker with a transparent background grew to 133 KB, because its smoothed edges added new colors. The card shows the new size first and says when it is larger than the original.
- Can I make a GIF bigger?
- The width box goes up to twice the original width. A GIF holds at most 256 colors a frame, so enlarging spreads the same pixels further and looks soft.
- Can I change the size on the canvas too?
- Yes. Choose Image > Image Size...: it rescales every frame layer at once. A width you typed in the card still applies to the download, so check the size line before you click Download GIF.
- What are the limits?
- One GIF at a time. Up to 256 colors a frame, dithered, with the original frame timing and loop. Each pixel is either transparent or solid, so soft edges turn hard. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
