Remove the background from a photo

Cut the subject out of a photo in a few seconds.

, or drop one here

Free at full size, with no watermark.

How to use it

Choose a photo and the AI finds the person, pet or product and cuts it out as a layer mask, right in the editor. Pick a transparent, white or colored background in the card and download a PNG. Hair and edges can be refined afterwards with Select and Mask instead of starting over. Thin lines and small gaps such as letter holes can close up; paint them back on the mask.

  1. Click Choose a photo, or drop an image anywhere on the page.
  2. Wait a few seconds to ten while the AI cuts the subject out. The first time it also downloads the model (about 44 MB); after that everything runs on your device.
  3. In the card above the canvas, pick a transparent, white or colored background and click Download PNG.
  4. To refine hair or edges, click the mask thumbnail in the Layers panel and paint, or choose Select > Select and Mask. The original photo is still there.
Is the photo uploaded?
No. The model (an open-source segmentation network, about 44 MB) downloads to your browser once and then runs locally, a few seconds to ten per photo. The full-size result is free, with no watermark. Full size means the size the photo opens at: a photo over 100 megapixels (about 16.7 megapixels on iPhone and iPad) is scaled down when it opens, and a note gives both sizes.
Can I fix parts the AI got wrong?
Yes. The original photo is kept under a layer mask: paint on the mask to add or remove areas, or choose Select > Select and Mask to refine hair and fur. The layers are never merged.
Why did a thin gap or a letter hole fill in?
The model works at 1024 × 1024, and the cleanup treats very small enclosed gaps as part of the subject, so thin lines and letter counters can close up. Paint them back on the mask with a black brush. If the card says the cut was made by color difference, every enclosed gap is filled.
What if the model can't load?
Photopip falls back to cutting by color difference from the background, and the card says so. Plain backgrounds still work; busy ones need the mask touched up.
How do I get a white or colored background?
Choose White or Color in the card before you download. Or add a Solid Color fill layer below the subject (Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color).
