Choose a photo and the AI Assistant blurs everything behind the person, pet or product while the subject stays sharp. Only background pixels go into the blur, so the subject's edge keeps its own color instead of getting a halo. Detection and blur both run in your browser.
- Click Choose a photo to blur. The photo opens and the AI Assistant runs "blur the background" on it.
- Wait a few seconds. The first time, a 44 MB model downloads to find the subject; after that it runs on your device. The blur radius is set from the photo, about 1/60 of its shorter side.
- Compare: press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Command+Z (macOS) to see the original, then Shift+Ctrl+Z or Shift+Command+Z to bring the blur back.
- Save with File > Export > Export As…; the blur is on the photo's layer, one History step, so you can keep editing on top of it.
- How do I blur the background like a phone's portrait mode?
- Open the photo and tell the AI Assistant "blur the background" or "portrait mode". Photopip finds the subject, blurs only the background and lays the sharp subject back over it with a soft edge. There is no depth map as on a phone, so everything behind the subject gets the same amount of blur; for a gradual falloff, use Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift on a copy of the layer.
- Can I choose what stays sharp?
- Yes. Make a selection first with the Lasso Tool or Select > Subject, then ask for the blur: the selection is used as the subject, and only the area outside it is blurred.
- Why is there no halo around the hair?
- Most tools blur the whole picture and paste the subject back, which drags the subject's colors into the background. Photopip gives subject pixels zero weight in the blur, so hair stays clean against the blurred background. If the detector misses a part, undo, select the subject by hand and run it again.
- What if the AI model doesn't load?
- Photopip finds the subject by color difference from the background instead. That works on plain backdrops; on a busy background, select the subject yourself first. The blur itself needs no model.
