How to use it

Choose a front-facing portrait and Photopip cuts the person out, puts them on a white, blue or red background and frames the head to a standard size, 35×45 mm or 2×2 in, at 300 ppi. Check it against your office's rules, then lay copies out for printing.

  1. Click Choose a portrait. Use a photo taken from the front, in even light, with a plain wall behind. The ID Photo dialog opens and detects the person; the first time it downloads a 44 MB model, after that it runs on your device.
  2. Pick a size and a background. Besides the general sizes, the list has passport and visa sizes for 10 regions, among them US passport 2×2 in (600×600 px), UK passport and EU passport / Schengen visa at 35×45 mm, and China passport 33×48 mm. The English interface starts on US passport with a white background; a passport or visa size switches to the background it calls for, and you can still pick white, blue, red, light gray, light blue or your own. The preview updates as you click.
  3. Adjust the framing if needed. Portrait Size runs from 70% to 140%; Left/Right and Up/Down nudge the face. The dashed guides mark the top of the head and the chin. For a passport or visa size, the head is framed to the middle of the head-height range stored for that size, a yellow band shows where the chin may fall, and the dialog lists the rules (head height, eye line, top margin, background). Other sizes use a head of about 60% of the height with 9% above it.
  4. Click OK for a new 300 ppi document, or Generate and lay out on 6-inch print to also get a 4×6 in sheet with cut lines. Save with File > Export > Export As…
Can I make a passport photo at home for free?
Yes, from a phone photo taken in front of a plain wall. Photopip does the cut-out, the background and the framing on your device at no cost. Printing is up to you: a 4×6 in print from any photo counter holds 12 one-inch photos, 8 at 35×45 mm, 6 at 2×2 in (edge to edge, cut along the lines) or 4 at 33×48 mm.
Will the photo be accepted?
Photopip gets the size and background right, and for the passport and visa sizes in its list it frames the head inside the head-height range stored for that size. It does not check expression, glasses or shadows, and offices update their rules. Compare the result with the official sample before you submit, and use Portrait Size if the head needs to be larger or smaller. Offices that forbid retouching may count a new backdrop as editing.
What if it says no person detected?
The detector needs a front-facing person who stands out from the background. Try a photo with a plain wall and the head near the center. Without the AI model, Photopip falls back to finding the person by color difference from the background, which only works on plain backdrops.
Can I fix the edges or change the color afterwards?
Yes. The result is a document with two layers: a Background layer in the color you chose and a Portrait layer with a layer mask. Paint on the mask to fix stray hair, or fill the Background layer with another color. Decontaminate Colors, on by default, removes fringes of the old background along the edge.
What is the file called?
Click OK, then File > Export > Export As…; the document is named after your photo and the size, like IMG_2048_US passport On White.
