Invert the colors of an image

Turn a picture into its negative and download it in seconds.

How to use it

Choose an image and its colors are inverted as it opens: black becomes white, red becomes cyan, blue becomes yellow, and anything transparent stays transparent. The result card saves it back in the same format. Use it to make a white version of black artwork for a dark T-shirt or a dark-mode logo, or to read a scanned negative.

  1. Click Choose an image, or drop a PNG or JPG on the page. It opens already inverted, and History shows Invert. White artwork looks faint on the gray-and-white checkerboard; that is the transparent background showing through.
  2. Not what you wanted? Press Ctrl+Z (Command+Z on a Mac, or the undo arrow at the top on a phone). To keep the inversion switchable instead, undo it first, close the card with ✕ and choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Invert; you can hide that layer later.
  3. Click Download PNG (or JPG, matching the file you opened). For the sample artwork the size line reads 64 KB → 108 KB · PNG · 1400 × 1000.
Does the transparent background stay transparent?
Yes. Only the color channels are inverted and the alpha channel is left alone, so a black logo on a transparent PNG becomes a white logo on the same transparent background.
My logo is on a white background and the whole thing turned black.
Inverting has no idea what is background; white turns black like everything else. Remove the background first with Transparent background maker (under More tools below), then invert.
Why did my photo turn blue and orange instead of just dark?
Every color becomes its opposite: a blue sky goes orange, skin goes blue-green. That is how a photographic negative looks.
Can I invert only part of the image?
Yes, in the editor. Undo the full inversion with Ctrl+Z, select the area, then press Ctrl+I (Command+I on a Mac); only the selection changes.
What are the limits?
It opens PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF (first frame), BMP and HEIC. PNG, JPG and WEBP save in the same format; others save as PNG if they have transparency, otherwise JPG. A JPG is re-encoded once at quality 92. Only the active layer is inverted, so a layered file needs flattening or an adjustment layer. Up to 100 million pixels. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
