Restore an old photo with AI

Clean up a faded scan and let AI bring the faces back.

How to use it

Yes, free with a Photopip account: open a scanned photo and the yellow cast, dust and fine scratches are removed on your device, then our AI model rebuilds the faces, with clear eyes, mouths and outlines. The result is a new layer above the original, at the same size. Tears, missing corners and large stains stay, and the photo is not colorized.

  1. Click Choose a scan, or drop the photo on the page. JPG, PNG, WEBP and HEIC open.
  2. Sign in when asked; it is free. The yellow cast, specks and noise are removed on your device, then the photo goes to our server and an AI model rebuilds the faces, usually in 5 to 20 seconds. History shows Old Photo Restoration.
  3. Compare: in Layers, click the eye next to Old Photo Restoration to see the original below it, and again to show the result.
  4. If you close the sign-in box, or the AI step can't be reached, the card says so and gives you the on-device result: cast and specks removed, faces not rebuilt. Click Sign in and retry or Retry to send it again.
  5. To change the steps, click More options...: set Remove Scratches, Reduce Noise, Remove Yellowing and Sharpen, or clear Restore faces with AI to keep everything on your device. Then click Download JPG; a PNG is saved as PNG.

Tested (30 Oct 2026)Three scanned portraits from Pexels, 1024 px tall: the AI step took 4 to 9 seconds each; eyes and mouths came back sharp, stains and torn edges stayed as they were

The AI step rebuilds faces. It does not fill tears, missing corners, fold lines or large stains: paint over those with the Remove Tool in the editor afterwards. It does not colorize either: a black-and-white photo stays black and white, though a face can pick up a faint skin tone. A rebuilt face is the model's best guess from what is left, so a face only a few pixels wide, turned away or blurred can come out smoother or slightly different from the person; the original is always in the layer below. The AI works on the photo at up to 2880 pixels on the long side, so a larger scan comes back at its own size but no sharper than that. Without signing in, offline, or after the daily limit, only the on-device steps run, and the card says so. One photo at a time.

Can I restore an old photo for free?
Yes. The on-device steps need no account. The AI face step is free with a Photopip account, up to 20 photos a day, with no watermark and the download at full size.
Does AI change the faces in an old photo?
It rebuilds detail the scan lost, such as eyes, lips and the outline of the face, from what is still there. On a clear face the person looks the same, only sharper. On a tiny, blurred or half-hidden face the model has to guess more, and the result can look smoother or slightly different. The original stays in the layer below, so you can compare or keep it.
Can it fix tears and missing pieces?
Not on its own. In the editor, choose the Remove Tool and paint over a tear, crease or stain: it is filled from the area around it.
Is my photo uploaded?
The yellow cast and specks are fixed on your device. For the face step the photo, up to 1440 px on the long side, goes to our server after you sign in, and the copies used are deleted automatically within one hour. To keep everything on your device, click More options... and clear Restore faces with AI.
Can it colorize a black-and-white photo?
No. This page cleans the photo and sharpens the faces; a black-and-white photo stays black and white, though a restored face can pick up a faint skin tone.
