How to use it

Choose a HEIC photo from an iPhone or iPad. Browsers other than Safari cannot show the format, so Photopip downloads a 2 MB decoder once and reads the photo on your device. The card above the canvas shows the JPG size at quality 92; click Download JPG.

  1. Click Choose a HEIC photo, or drop the file on the page. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox the first HEIC takes a few seconds longer while the decoder (about 2 MB) downloads; after that it is cached.
  2. Check the card above the canvas: JPG is selected and the line reads, for example, 98 KB → 182 KB · JPG · 1152 × 896.
  3. Click Download JPG. The file keeps its name with a .jpg extension. Pick several HEIC files in the dialog to get one zip.
Why is the JPG larger than the HEIC?
HEIC compresses better than JPG, so the JPG at quality 92 is usually larger; the card shows both sizes before you download. If size matters more, click Compress under the card and set a limit such as 500 KB.
Does it work on Windows?
Yes. The decoding happens in the browser, not in the operating system, so Windows, Android and Linux work the same as a Mac. Safari opens HEIC natively and skips the decoder.
What happens to the location and date in the photo?
They are not in the JPG: Photopip doesn't read HEIC metadata, and the JPG is written fresh from the picture at quality 92, so no EXIF, no GPS and no orientation tag go along.
What about Live Photos and burst shots?
Only the main still image is read. A HEIC that contains several images opens with the first one.
Need a PDF instead of a JPG?
Image to PDF takes HEIC photos too and puts several on A4 or Letter pages in one file.
What are the limits?
Several files can go into one zip; each can be up to 100 million pixels and is decoded in your browser, not uploaded. The JPG is written at quality 92 (PNG if you switch), without EXIF, GPS or an orientation tag. Colors in Display P3 are converted to sRGB, so the most saturated reds and greens are clipped slightly. If a photo opens sideways, rotate it with Image > Image Rotation before downloading.
