Convert a JPG to WEBP

Make a photo lighter for your web page or shop listing, in seconds.

How to use it

Page-speed tools and shop themes ask for WEBP because it holds the same photo in fewer bytes; Google's WebP documentation puts lossy WEBP at 25–34% smaller than a JPEG of equal quality. Open the JPG and the card writes a WEBP at quality 92, with the new size shown before you download. The 1200 × 1200 sample mug photo goes from 271 KB to 222 KB.

  1. Click Choose a JPG, or drop the photo on the page. Choose several at once and they come back as one zip.
  2. In the card WEBP is already selected and the size line shows before and after; for the sample it reads 271 KB → 222 KB · WEBP · 1200 × 1200. For another quality, click More options…, choose WebP under Format in Export As and move Quality.
  3. Click Download WEBP. The name stays and the extension becomes .webp.
ItemDetails
OpensJPG, JPEG and JFIF; several files at once
SavesWEBP (lossy) at quality 92 with an sRGB tag; JPG or PNG in the same card
Limit16,383 pixels a side for WEBP; 100 million pixels a file
Where it runsIn your browser; nothing is uploaded

Safari can't write WEBP, and neither can browsers on iPhone and iPad that run on Safari's engine; there the card saves a JPG and says so in its title before you download. A JPG that was saved at low quality can come out bigger as WEBP. EXIF (camera, date, location) is not carried over.

Why is my WEBP bigger than the JPG?
The JPG was already compressed hard, and quality 92 writes back more detail than it kept. A quality-60 copy of the sample mug photo goes from 64 KB to 96 KB. Click Compress under Next and set a size cap, or lower Quality in More options….
Can I do this in Safari or on an iPhone?
You can open the JPG, but Safari and the iPhone and iPad browsers built on its engine can't write WEBP. The card's title changes to Will save as JPG and the line under it says why; the sample then comes out as a 236 KB JPG. For a WEBP, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer.
Will the WEBP open everywhere?
Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox show it, as does Safari 16 and later on a Mac and on iPhone and iPad since iOS 14. Some upload forms and older desktop programs still refuse .webp; keep the JPG for those.
Can I convert a whole folder of photos?
Choose them all in the file dialog. The card switches to Download ZIP and every JPG in the zip is written the same way.
