Add text to a photo

Type a price, a date or a caption onto a photo; the words stay an editable layer until you download.

How to use it

Choose a photo and the Horizontal Type Tool is ready: click where the words should go and type. Set the font, size and color in the options bar, and add a stroke or a drop shadow from Layer > Layer Style so the words read on any background. The text stays a layer until you download, so a typo is one click away from fixed.

  1. Click Choose a photo, or drop one on the page. The Horizontal Type Tool (T) is selected.
  2. Click the photo where the words should start and type. Set the font, size and color in the options bar. In desktop Chrome or Edge, Load Local Fonts... at the bottom of the font list adds the fonts installed on your computer.
  3. To make the words stand out, choose Layer > Layer Style > Stroke... (3 px, Outside, a dark color) or Drop Shadow... and click OK. Layer > Layer Style > Apply Style Preset has six ready-made looks, such as White Stroke and Soft Drop Shadow.
  4. Click outside the text to finish. The card shows the size; click Download JPG, or pick PNG first. On a phone there is no card: tap Export at the top right. To edit the words later, choose File > Save As... and save a PSD.

WhereIn your browser; the photo is not uploaded

Safari, Firefox and phone browsers don't share installed fonts with a web page, so they keep the six built-in stacks. A JPG is re-encoded once at quality 92 when you download; pick PNG to keep it lossless. In a downloaded JPG or PNG the text is part of the picture; only a PSD keeps it editable. This page does one photo at a time.

Why are there only six fonts?
The list starts with six built-in stacks. In desktop Chrome or Edge, click Load Local Fonts... at the bottom of the list and allow it once; every font on your computer appears. Safari, Firefox and phone browsers can't share installed fonts with a web page, so there the option shows a message instead.
Can I change the text after downloading?
Not in the JPG or PNG; the words are part of the picture. Save a PSD with File > Save As... and the type layer stays editable when you open it here again.
The white text disappears on a light photo.
Add a Stroke or a Drop Shadow from Layer > Layer Style. Both sit on the type layer and follow the words when you edit them. Outer Glow, Gradient Overlay and Bevel and Emboss are in the same menu.
Can I add the same line to 50 photos?
Not on this page. The batch watermark page puts one line of text, or a logo, on every photo in a set.
