Convert a PNG to WEBP

Keep the see-through background and get a smaller file for your site, in seconds.

How to use it

A logo or screenshot saved as PNG is often the heaviest file on a page. Open it here and the card writes a WEBP at quality 92 with every transparent area kept; the checkerboard on the canvas shows where they are. The 1000 × 1000 sample logo goes from 170 KB to 74 KB.

  1. Click Choose a PNG, or drop the file on the page. Transparent areas show as a gray-and-white checkerboard. Several files chosen together come back as one zip.
  2. In the card WEBP is already selected and the line under the title reads Transparency kept; quality 92. For the sample logo the size line reads 170 KB → 74 KB · WEBP · 1000 × 1000.
  3. Zoom in on the lettering. If the edges look soft, click More options…, choose WebP under Format in Export As and raise Quality; otherwise click Download WEBP.
ItemDetails
OpensPNG, with or without transparency; several files at once
SavesWEBP (lossy) at quality 92, transparency kept; PNG or JPG in the same card
Limit16,383 pixels a side for WEBP; 100 million pixels a file
Where it runsIn your browser; nothing is uploaded

The card writes lossy WEBP, so flat color and small lettering can pick up a faint fringe. If every pixel has to stay exactly as it is, keep the PNG. Safari can't write WEBP, and neither can browsers on iPhone and iPad that run on Safari's engine; there the card saves a PNG instead (a JPG if the picture has no transparent areas) and says so in its title.

Why is the WEBP so much smaller than the PNG?
PNG stores every pixel exactly; lossy WEBP keeps the transparency but lets go of detail you rarely see. Google's WebP documentation puts lossy WEBP with transparency at about a third of the PNG's size; the sample logo drops from 170 KB to 74 KB.
Can I put the logo on white instead?
Yes. Click More options…, choose WebP under Format and turn off Transparency; the WEBP is saved on white. Picking JPG in the card fills white too, as a JPG.
Can I convert a folder of icons at once?
Choose them together in the file dialog. The card switches to Download ZIP, and every PNG in the zip is written as WEBP at the same quality, transparency kept.
Why did I get a PNG in Safari?
Safari, and the iPhone and iPad browsers built on its engine, can't write WEBP. The card's title changes to Will save as PNG before you download: the transparency is kept, but the file isn't smaller (the sample logo comes out at 233 KB). Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer write the WEBP.
