Convert a JPG to ICO

Make a favicon or a Windows icon from the logo you have, in seconds.

How to use it

A JPG has no transparency, so a logo saved as JPG brings its white background into the icon, and on a dark taskbar or tab bar it shows as a white square. Choose the JPG and the result card writes one .ico with 16, 32 and 48 px inside. When all four corners are one solid color, the card says so and offers Remove background before you download.

  1. Click Choose a JPG, or drop it on the page. Start from 256 × 256 or larger.
  2. For the 600 × 600 sample the card reads The icon has a solid square behind it, and the dark preview shows the white square. Click Remove background; it runs on your device and takes a few seconds.
  3. The first time, it also downloads a 44 MB model. On a phone it asks before downloading, and Cancel uses a simpler cut by color instead. The original stays under a layer mask, so you can close the card with ✕ and touch up the edges.
  4. When the card reads Will save as ICO · 3 sizes inside, click Download ICO; the sample goes from 22 KB to 6 KB. To keep the background instead, click Download ICO Anyway before removing it.
Why does my icon have a white square around it?
JPG stores no transparency, so the corners are whatever color the picture had there. On a light tab bar you hardly notice; on a dark one it is a white square. Remove background cuts the logo out, and the card rewrites the .ico with clear corners.
Can I keep the background?
Yes: click Download ICO Anyway. A photo, or a logo on a colored tile, often looks right with its own background. The card only stops you when all four corners are the same solid color, so a picture with mixed corners goes straight to Download ICO.
Does removing the background download something?
The first time, a background model of about 44 MB downloads to your browser, and later runs load it from the browser's cache. The cut is the model's guess: good on a logo against a plain backdrop, less reliable on a busy photo, so check the edges on the dark preview.
Is a JPG good enough for an icon?
Usually. The largest size in the default set is 48 px, and JPG blockiness rarely survives being shrunk that far. If you also have the logo as a PNG, use that; it brings its transparency with it.
What are the limits?
Two size sets: 16 · 32 · 48, or 16 · 24 · 32 · 48 · 256 for a Windows app icon. Each size is a 32-bit PNG inside the .ico. Several JPGs chosen together come back as one zip with their backgrounds kept; to remove a background, convert that JPG on its own. Up to 100 million pixels a file. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
