Convert an ICO to PNG

Get the biggest picture out of an icon file in seconds.

How to use it

An .ico file is a container: it holds several sizes of the same icon, up to 256 × 256 pixels. Choose the file and Photopip opens the largest of them on the canvas, and the result card saves it as a PNG with the transparent background kept.

  1. Click Choose an ICO, or drop the file on the page. The largest picture inside opens on the canvas, on a gray-and-white checkerboard where it is transparent. Several .ico files chosen together come back as one zip, the largest picture of each as a PNG.
  2. Read the card: PNG is already selected, and the size line shows the picture you got. For the sample icon it reads 34 KB → 36 KB · PNG · 256 × 256.
  3. Click Download PNG. To clean the icon up first, close the card with ✕, edit it, then save it with File > Export > Export As...
Which picture inside the icon do I get?
The largest one in the file. Chrome and the engine behind Safari both open the largest picture of an .ico, whether the sizes inside are stored as PNG or BMP (tested 23 Oct 2026). Firefox hasn't been checked; if a smaller size opens there, the card's size line shows it.
Why is my PNG only 32 × 32?
Because that was the biggest picture in the file. Old favicons often hold only 16 and 32 pixel versions, and enlarging one of those just makes it blurry.
Can I use a favicon from someone else's website?
The icon belongs to whoever made it. Using it as your own logo or mark needs their permission.
What are the limits?
You get the largest picture only; the smaller sizes in the file are not exported. An .ico holds at most 256 × 256 pixels, so that is the biggest PNG you can get from one. PNG keeps transparency; pick JPG and the transparent areas are filled with white. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
