Resize product images for Shopify: 2048 × 2048

Get a whole collection to the same square shape, with nothing cropped.

How to use it

Shopify's help page says product images can be any size up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels, must be smaller than 20 MB, and that 2048 × 2048 px usually displays best for square images. It also asks for one aspect ratio across your main images so they line up on collection pages (Product media types, checked 24 Oct 2026). Choose one photo or a whole collection: each is padded to a square in white or its own edge color, scaled down to 2048 px if it is bigger, and saved as a JPG. Nothing is cropped or enlarged.

  1. Click Choose product photos and select the collection, or drop the photos on the page.
  2. Wait for the report. Each photo is padded to a square and, if it is larger than 2048 px, scaled down to 2048 × 2048. Photos smaller than that keep their size and are listed on a line of their own.
  3. Under Padding, click White, Edge color or Extend background. Edge color fills with the average of each photo's four corners, which blends in when all four corners are the same plain color and shows as a flat band when they aren't. Extend background continues the backdrop into the padding. It looks natural on plain, gradient and evenly textured surfaces such as concrete; a photo with a shelf, table edge or other object at those edges gets Edge color instead, and the report lists it. The whole set runs again.
  4. To adjust one photo, click its thumbnail, change it in the editor and click Put back in the batch. Then click Download ZIP and add the files under Media on the product page in your Shopify admin.

File sizeSmaller than 20 MBSaves JPG at quality 92; the six sample squares come out between 160 KB and 1.1 MB
FormatPNG is best, then JPEG; TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP are also acceptedSaves JPG

Photos smaller than 2048 px are padded to a square of their own size, not enlarged: a 1500 × 1000 photo becomes 1500 × 1500. The card doesn't remove backgrounds; for a product cut out onto pure white, use the product photo page. Many guides still quote a 4472 × 4472 limit; Shopify's page now says 5000 × 5000 or 25 megapixels. Your theme decides how the squares are shown. Photopip is not affiliated with Shopify.

What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify's help page says up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels and under 20 MB, and that 2048 × 2048 usually displays best for square images (checked 24 Oct 2026). This page turns anything larger into a 2048 × 2048 square.
Why are my products different sizes on the collection page?
Because the main images have different aspect ratios, and the theme lines them up by shape. Shopify asks for one ratio across them. Padding each photo to a square, rather than cropping it, keeps the whole product in the picture.
Should I upload WebP?
There's no need. Shopify's Imagery service works out which formats each visitor's browser supports and shows the best one, so upload JPG or PNG. This page saves JPG because a photo saved as PNG at 2048 × 2048 is several times larger: the sample cutting boards are 555 KB as a JPG and about 3.8 MB as a PNG.
Can I remove the background too?
Not on this card; it pads, it doesn't cut out. The product photo page cuts the product out and places it on pure white.
