Fix a fake transparent PNG

Clear the gray-and-white squares painted into an image and get real transparency.

How to use it

If the gray and white squares are part of the picture, the file isn't transparent, however it looked in a chat or a thumbnail. Choose it here: the card measures the squares on the clean rows along the edges, then clears every pixel that matches the square color expected at its position, working in from the edges, so squares showing through a hole in the artwork go too.

  1. Click Choose the image. On a computer you can also drop the PNG or JPG on the page.
  2. Wait for the card. It reads the size of the squares and their two colors from the edges of the image; the sample has 16-pixel white and light gray squares.
  3. Check the result. The card says Checkerboard removed and the size of the squares it found, and the canvas now shows the editor's own checkerboard, which stays the same size when you zoom.
  4. Leave Transparent selected and click Download PNG. To check it, pick Color in the card: the art should sit on the color with no squares around it.

FindsAn even grid of square tiles in two colors, any tile size
GivesPNG with transparency, same pixel size as the original
Where it runsIn your browser, with no model to download

Only an even, square grid is recognized. Warped or fading squares, which some image generators draw, aren't; then the card cuts out the subject with the AI model instead and says so. Shadows, glows and soft edges were flattened into the squares when the image was made: they come back with a harder edge, and a drop shadow is lost. A hole smaller than one square, inside small lettering, can't be told apart from the artwork and stays. White or light gray in the artwork that touches a square of the same color is cleared with the squares, and a pale color close to white, such as cream, can get pinholes along its edges: in our test, a badge with a cream center lost about 11,000 of its pixels this way. Check the result on a color before you use it.

How do I know if my PNG is really transparent?
Open it here. If the edges are already transparent, the card says Already transparent and changes nothing. In the editor, real transparency shows the editor's own checkerboard, which by default stays the same size when you zoom; squares that grow as you zoom in are pixels.
Why does my AI image have a checkerboard?
Some chat image tools draw the transparency pattern instead of writing a transparent background, so the download is an ordinary opaque image with squares in it.
Will the edges be as smooth as the original?
Close, not the same. The edge pixels are worked back from the square color behind each one, but a soft edge or a glow that was blended into the squares can't be recovered exactly.
Can I fix several files at once?
No, one at a time on this page.
